Cindy Sheehan was once the darling of the anti-war left. Homesteading a mosquito infested, mud-encrusted patch of dirt and weeds in Crawford, Texas – inappropriately named “Camp Casey” – Sheehan and her sycophants captured the attention of the usual gamut of leftist Democratic losers.
America’s foremost race-baiter, Al Sharpton showed up to embrace Cindy and praise her courage. Black apologist and adulterer, the Reverend Jesse Jackson showed up to pray with Cindy. Hollywood’s too rich with too much time on their hands, wacky left-wing liberals like Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, and Sean Penn flew in to squat for a while in Cindy’s ditch before swatting the fleas off and boarding their personal jets to fly back home to air conditioning, running water, swimming pools, and dinner at Wolfgang Pucks.
Two years and two months ago, Cindy Sheehan was calling it quits. She tendered her resignation as the “face” of the anti-war movement. Barely two years after squatting in a sun-baked Crawford, Texas ditch outside the Bush ranch, Mother Sheehan was going home and try to repair the family relationships she sacrificed to call attention to her son’s death and end the war in Iraq. Sheehan said she had become disillusioned with the struggle which had ravaged her bank account, wrecked her marriage, and strained her relationship with her surviving children.
Now Mother Sheehan is back…parked outside the media center used by journalists covering Obama’s vacation on Clinton’s favorite vacation destination, Martha’s Vineyard. Armed with the “moral authority” bequeathed to her by the New York Time’s Maureen Dowd, Sheehan was asked what she hopes to accomplish with Obama that she failed to accomplish with Bush:
First of all, no good social or economic change will come about with the continuation or escalation of the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. We simply can’t afford to continue this tragically expensive foreign policy.
Secondly, we as a movement need to continue calling for an immediate end to the occupations even when there is a Democrat in the Oval Office. There is still no Noble Cause no matter how we examine the policies.
Thirdly, the body bags aren’t taking a vacation and as the U.S.-led violence surges in Afghanistan and Pakistan, so are the needless deaths on every side.
And, finally, if the right-wing can force the government to drop any kind of public option or government supported health care, then we need to exert the same kind of pressure to force a speedy end to the occupations.
Will the media cover Sheehan in Massachusetts like they covered her in Texas? Don’t count on it. After Bush left office, the media and even the left-wing of the Democratic Party dropped their opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan faster than Bill Clinton’s pants on intern initiation night.
The philosophical question of, “If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound” has a corollary. “If the mainsteam media doesn’t cover an anti-Obama event, does it really happen?”
