Gore: We Have a "Moral Duty to Pass Health Care Reform"

Following Teddy Kennedy’s elaborate funeral, Bill Clinton and Al Gore rolled into Nashville Saturday night for the Jackson Day Democratic fundraiser…and to stump for Barack Obama’s national health care plan.

“Playing off the focus of the Kennedy funeral on the Gospel of Matthew’s parable of Jesus “taking care of the least of us,” Al Gore thundered,

[The country has] a “moral duty to pass health care reform. This year.”

Clinton_GoreJust where, exactly, did the president of the United States or the Congress get the power to decide what is a “moral duty” for the rest of us?

Even a cursory glance at the “morals” of the members of Congress should be enough to make this claim preposterous.

The real story is of course in the details of what Clinton and Gore actually said about why the the health care reform measure must be passed:

Bill Clinton:

“We need to pass a bill this year. Doing nothing is not only the worst thing we can do for the economy, it’s the worst thing we can do for the country. It’s also the worst thing we can do for the Democrats. Democrats, you stay in there with your congressmen and you get this done.”

Al Gore:

“We have a lot of talk about liberal and conservative, and left and right, but when there are tens of millions of people in our country who can’t get access to health care, we need to pass health care reform this year. Build support for it. Let’s give President Obama the victory our country needs.”

Oh, I see. So it really has nothing to do with morals at all.

Democrats need to pass a bill to give them a shot at re-election in 2010. The bottom line is…health care reform has to pass this year for one reason only…to give President Obama a victory.

Ahh yes, the truth comes out. On the bright side, at least they are finally being honest with us; the only reason the bill’s got to pass is to save their butts!

    Great post!
